Quality
The ceramic case of the PAM 292 is incredibly durable and scratch resistant. Fear not of having your watch scratched, as the material is dense and if nicked is more likely to chip or shatter (unlikely) then scratch and reveal a shiny silver steel under material as is the risk with PVD coating. The back of the watch has a solid steel pvd case back. It keeps with the Black Seal vibe, but it would have been nice to have a display case back as I'm sure the movement (as is consistent with all Panerais) is beautiful on the inside. On that note, the movement is a mechanical manual wind movement with a power reserve that isn't extraordinary, nor is it underwhelming. It sits at what seems to be an average reserve nowadays of a little over 40 hours when fully wound. While it does keep precise time, it would have been nice to have an in-house Panerai made movement with the PAM 292. Unfortunately, as it is one of the "More Affordable" ceramic Panerais, this doesn't get said treatment (for the must have in-house gang, check out the upwards of $30k PAM 317).
The PAM 292 is one of the original ceramic models offered from Panerai. It has now been released in several series, with the first "Pig" series fetching increased resale values. The reason for this is because of the inclusion of a "Pig" (italian submarine) graphic above the six o'clock mark. Only the first edition of this watch received this graphic and thus it has gone on to resell at upwards of two to three times its original MSRP.
Overall the PAM 292 is a stunning watch. You'll be hard pressed to take it off once you try it on and at this price point it is a nice way to get in to the Panerai family of watches. That being said, when compared to the remainder of the field of high end watches at the 8-9000 price point, I will say that it is possible to get "more watch" for your money. Look to the IWC top gun watch to make your decision an even harder one. At the end of the day though, it's a fantastic watch. (Posted on 7/26/2012)
