Officine Panerai was founded in Florence, Italy in 1860 by Giovanni Panerai; over the decades both his son and grandson ran the business. Today, the Panerai boutique that was erected in 1900 in Florence still stands. In 1934, the Radiomir and Luminor collections were created. Panerai was commissioned by the Italian navy to produce a watch that could be easily read underwater; perhaps this is where the idea for their now infamous, extra large watch face came from.

The Luminor is one of the styles that first made Panerai watches famous. In 1995, Sylvester Stallone brought international attention to the Luminor when he bought one in Rome and said of it: "I immediately felt when I saw the watch that it had star power."
The Luminor by Panerai
During WWII, Panerai developed the Luminor, which used tritium. These were state of the art pieces at the time and were used by the Itlaian Navy to execute the sinking of Allied naval ships. The classic designs have repeatedly been improved upon over the years.
All Panerai watches come with 44 mm sized cases and the Luminor 1950 is no exception. On the dial, both the names Panerai and Luminor are present. This is another perfect example of a classic Panerai design; simple yet unforgettable.
The Luminor 1950 by Panerai
The Luminor 1950 features a black dial with luminescent numbers and indices, minute counter at 3 o'clock, and small seconds at 9 o'clock, all surrounded by stainless steel case.
The Luminor Base style is perhaps the most simple of all Panerai designs, but also the most appealing as the traits that made Panerai famous are seen perfectly here. Large numerals at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions and sleek hands are all this watch needs.

The Luminor Base is made of sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. The back has a see-through sapphire crystal as well. Luminous markers featured on the dial. The watch is water resistant up to 300 meters.
As early as 1930, Panerai had an exclusive contract with the Italian military and provided not only watches, like the Marina, but also torches and aiming sites for torpedoes. However, it wasn't until 1993 that these watches were made available to the general public.
The Luminor Marina
The Luminor Marina uses the basic Luminor model and adds a COSC certified chronometer and sub-dial seconds hand. It is also available in left-hand versions. The Marina comes with a steel band, steel case, white dial, and date calendar.
The Radiomir, which used radium, was the first watch model designed by Panerai. These were considered simple, yet state of the art pieces at that time, during the mid 1900's. The Radiomir has evolved over time but still features an easy to read case, winding crown, screwed back and a strong cushion shape.

Experience the Luxury of Panerai Watches
The allure of Panerai watches is in their simplicity; there is not an overwhelming choice of different models and styles to choose from. If Panerai watches are known for one thing, it’s their extra large faces (40 and 44mm) and simplicity of design (with extra large numerals at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions). Panerai watches are not mass produced and this keeps their allure and demand high.
