It’s not hard to understand why some people would choose to by a replica of an authentic watch. A TAG Heuer Aquaracer Calibre 5 costs roughly a grand, while a Breitling Bentley is almost 100 hundred times that. Even a savvy buyer looking for a genuine watch on the used market knows it will cost him at least a few hundred dollars. Because of the high cost associated with luxury brand watches, a replica seems like the perfect deal: a chance to wear a Rolex or Omega watch for a fraction of the price either cost.

What these seemingly smart shoppers miss is that there’s a reason authentic watches come with a high price tag. Watches that carry a luxury name are hand-crafted under stringent quality controls, feature accurate movements, and are made from the finest materials. Replicas, on the other hand, feature inferior movements, cheaper materials, inconsistencies, and can even have contaminants like hairs trapped underneath the crystal.

With all of the inaccuracies and inconsistencies that come with replica watches, it’s easy to say that you get what you pay for. But there is one other thing to consider when looking at the authentic versus replica decision: people who wear authentic watches have the satisfaction of knowing that the watch on their wrist is the real deal, and the people who wear them know this can’t be underestimated or understated.

When choosing a watch, most people look for something to suit them, something they’ll be proud to wear. Perhaps it should be something that could stand out a little, but not too much. It’s a fine line to walk, but that’s what people in the fashion industry do every single day. And that’s what watches are usually up for sale. However, recently, a most peculiar Rolexes has joined the shelf of watches sale.

It is by far one of the most decorated watches, and to many, it could also be considered the ugliest. The watch case is no less than 18K yellow gold and has 36 baguette cognac sapphires set into the frame. On both ends lay 48 diamonds and another 8 on the actual dial. And in case the dial wasn’t going to stand out enough amongst all of the treasures surrounding it, a leopard-print has been added so that the face of the watch screams loud enough to be seen.

The watch is price-tagged at just $46,000, probably losing its appeal to many potential buyers just because of that price. But someone out there will most certainly deem this watch a worthy spending and will enjoy the new status of being the wearer of the world’s ugliest watch.

So far this summer has been an active one for thieves, as they’ve gone about stealing luxury watches and jewelry around the world. Last week was the Cartier heist on the French Riviera and then the raid of actor Orlando Bloom’s Los Angeles home.

While Bloom was in New York filming a new flick, someone with know-how busted into his home and stole about $500,000 worth of valuables, including pieces from his esteemed collection of watches. One of the watches taken was an ultra-rare $250,000 Rolex Milgauss from the 1950s.

“The Milgauss that Orlando had was one of the rarest, most important and most sought-after watches in the world of watch collecting, easily worth $250,000,” Robert Maron, chairman of Manhattan-based watch dealer Antiquorum Auctioneers, told the Daily News.

It’s been noted that Bloom, even though young at 32, has an incredible eye for vintage watches, buying only the best and had become quite the collector over the years. Maron said “It’s a sad day for collectors. We want to preserve as many of these watches as we can. So many have already vanished.”
Not only was Bloom good at selecting high-end watches, he was also quite generous in giving them away. Just last month, at a benefit for Unicef, Bloom auctioned off four watches from his personal collection, including another rare Rolex, this one being a 1973 Explorer II “Steve McQueen.”

Although Orland must be upset about the robbery, jewelry was also stolen, at least he’s still lucky in love and continues to date Victoria Secret model Miranda Kerr.

If you consider yourself a watch aficionado and would like to start your own collection of luxury watches, you can, and you don’t have to have the fortune that Orlando Bloom does.

At our prices, you’ll have quite the collection in no time.

Get started now!

Rolex Explorer II

Okay, aside from his gold records and enormous wealth, there are plenty of reasons to be jealous of John Mayer: off the top of my head, the first few include Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Love Hewitt (both before the fall), Minka Kelly, Heidi Klum, Jennifer Aniston, and every third photo from the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.

And now he has another collection that I lust for: and their names are Tag Heuer, Patek Philippe, Audemars, Panerai, IWC, and Rolex (that slut) more specifically the Rolex Explorer II.

It so happens that Mr. Mayer’s timepiece collection is a, well (forgive me) wonderland. As his fame and fortune have grown, so has his love of fine luxury watches, so in the next several posts I will be reviewing some of his finest pieces.

And the one I will start with is the old standby… Madam Rolex.

When Mayer first really hit it big right around the time he was twenty-three, he allowed himself his first true indulgence on the wristwatch front, and as is often the case with many who find the means to go for it, he bought himself a Rolex, specifically a Rolex Explorer II.

The Rolex Explorer II has a stainless steel bracelet and case. Its dial is white with a date display at the 3 o’clock position. It also gives a second time zone. It has scratch resistant sapphire a case diameter of 40mm and automatic movement. Finally it is water resistant down to 30 meters.

Not a bad start for a watch collection that, as you will see, gets better and better.
