Modern Watches Gone Wild

Modern Watches Are Out Of This World

According to Wikipedia, a watch is a timepiece that is made to be worn on a person, usually on the wrist.  That is true, but it also stands true that watches are more than tellers of time.  Today’s watches come in all shapes and sizes, and are equipped with many innovative functions.  Watchmakers of yesteryear would hardly recognize some of these creations…as a matter of fact, a few of the watches I discovered, made me scratch my head.Let’s see if you recognize any of these modern marvels.

First the DZ9024 Multi Display by Diesel.  This watch features five individual watches in one, each with its own face, dial and winding mechanism.  I guess the idea is to save time setting your watch to a different time-zone, but seriously…unless you are traveling from here to there at warp speed…it doesn’t take too long to adjust the time.

The Earth Watch from Seiko is another funky find.  This watch has a large round dial and a floating miniature Earth in the center.  The Earth makes an actual rotation every 24 hours, and that’s cool, but I really see how you tell what time it is.

And finally, the watch that’s only a watch when you want it to be?  The Hologram watch displays the time in the negative space between the bangles.  When you don’t care about the time and just want to look fashionable…it can do that too.

I know it’s 2010, but I kind of still love traditional watches that tell time, reliably and predictably…without an abundance of artistic intervention.  Call me old-fashioned.

Michele Watches release Tropical Paradise Collection

Michele Watches have a new line of women’s timepieces that are being released at the end of February.  Entitled the Tropical Paradise Collection, the line arrives just in time for the beginning of the summer shopping season.

Michele Tropical Sea Turtle Watch

Michele’s Tropical Paradise Collection consists of three watches.  Each watch is based on a different animal that is featured in a scene set in the dial.  To accompany these elaborate pictures, each watch is fitted with a set of diamonds on the dial and case, as well as a color-coordinated strap.  The Tropical Paradise Monkey watch comes with 51 diamonds, totaling 0.34 ct, and a golden alligator strap.  The Tropical Paradise Sea Turtle watch has 53 diamonds, totaling 0.35 ct, and a turquoise alligator strap.  The Tropical Paradise Fish watch is fitted with 56 diamonds, totaling 0.36 ct, and a hot pink alligator strap.

Each watch in the Tropical Paradise Collection can be fitted with any strap Michele offers.  All three feature a date window and the red Michele logo.  The watches have white enamel dials, 36 mm cases, sapphire crystals, accurate Swiss movements, and are water resistant to 5 ATM.

The watches in Michele’s Tropical Paradise Collection are the perfect watches for any beach-loving lady.  The wide range of strap options means that women of all style persuasions can make these watches suit their particular tastes, and the fun tropical themes make these timepieces great for a summer day out in the sun.

IWC Watches found in new iPhone app

On January 11, 2010, IWC released an exciting new iPhone application for their collections of watches.  Aimed at giving fans and patrons of the brand simple, direct access to all the main content of their website, IWC’s app is filled with interactive and unique features that anyone can have fun with.

IWC Aquatimer Colletion

The app’s main feature is its immense collection of digital animations that explain many of the complex mechanisms found in IWC watches.  Two notable examples are the depth gauge found on the Aquatimer Deep Two and the digital calendar found on the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Digital Date Month.  App users can virtually wind up the power source on the Portuguese Automatic, or, if need be, use the button found on the Big Ingenieur Chronograph to record stopped time.

The most intriguing feature of IWC’s app is the Try-It function.  Using the Try-It function, iPhone owners can take a picture of their wrist and then see how the various watches look on their wrist.  This ingenious feature allows potential customers determine which models they like best without even stepping into a store.  When they find a model they like, the app provides them with a locator that helps guide them to the closest IWC retailer.

On top of all these great features, the IWC watch app is available for free and in 6 different languages.

Panerai watches open new boutiques around the world

panerai logoLate last year, Officine Panerai, maker of the fine Italian Panerai watches, announced that it would be opening 5 new boutiques in just as locations.  People located in the international shopping capitals of Doha (Qatar), Beruit (Lebanon), Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Geneva (Switzerland), and Macao (China) can now experience a full immersion into Panerai culture.

With 11 boutiques already located in places such as Beverly Hills and Dubai, these new boutiques allow Panerai to make distribution more targeted and exclusive and offer a larger selection of products to customers worldwide.  Each boutique is made to evoke the sea, with the arcitechture, furnishings, materials, and colors all working to create a harmonious vision of the ocean.  The watch collections themselves are housed in settings of teak and steel, with portholes serving as the viewing windows and furnishings imitating waves or yatch hulls.

The locations of the boutiques represent a mix of ambitious and safe marketing.  The locations in the Middle East and China tap into rapidly growing consumer markets, while the Geneva location roots Panerai in the ancient horological culture of the Swiss.  CEO Angelo Bonati states that the new boutiques are part of an initiative to solidify and continue the legend of the historical Florentine brand.

Tissot watches now available on the iPhone

tissot iphoneIt is no secret that the iPhone’s application abilities make it a great tool for companies to reach new potential customers, and Tissot is happy to jump on the bandwagon.  Making good use of the iPhone’s app capabilities, Tissot recently released a T-Touch watch application for the iPhone.  With the app, users of Apple’s extremely popular phone gain access to some of the 15 functions found on the T-Touch Expert, a watch geared towards adventurous outdoorsmen like professional mountaineers, extreme skiers, and divers.

When the app is opened, a high-quality graphic image of the Tissot T-Touch watch appears.  All the touch areas found on the watch are active on the graphic representation, giving iPhone users a watch in their pocket.  The iPhone’s integrated GPS technology facilitates the altimeter and compass found on the watch, while the chronograph and alarm functions operate in the same manner they do on the watch.  Dummy values are inserted for the thermometer and barometer functions.

In addition to these functions, the app also provides important information on the Tissot watch.  This information is provided in order to guide potential buyers in their purchasing decision.  The app not only provides information on the T-Touch, but on a wide variety of brand news and information. Going even one step further, the app also incorporates a store locator to show users their closest dealer.

12 unique watches auctioning for charity

The famed music group Depeche Mode has launched an auction to benefit Britain’s Teenage Cancer Trust. The group has put up 12 watches for auction which have been uniquely designed for the winners, with one time release designs. Each of the twelve Hublot watches features another design from one of the twelve studio albums produced by the band.

Joining forces with the band is Hublot, the Swiss producers of luxury watches for thirty years, the Geneva auction house Patrizzi & Co. and LiveAuctioneers.com, both professional and renowned auction companies whose involvement is sure to raise the success of the auction.

The Teenage Cancer Trust was established in 1997 and aims to assist teenagers and young adults suffering from cancer, leukemia and other related diseases by giving them access to special units which provide a more fun environment for the patient and has proven to improve the chances of recovery by about 15%.

Each of the watches won in the auction will come in specially designed presentation boxed, with more gifts than just a watch. Some of the extra perks include: A deluxe vinyl version of the album, a USB Key containing photos and a documentary about the making of the album and a signed photograph of the band members who were involved in the production of the album.

Bidding begins on 24th of February.  And all proceeds will be donated to the Teenage Cancer Trust only two days later.

A worthy cause, with some very worthy prizes!

Oris celebrates first birthday of MyOris

myoris birthdayAfter being online for just 12 months, Oris recently had its 20,000th member sign up for its online service, MyOris.  With members coming from 145 countries, it’s clear the service’s popularity has spread far and wide.  What is MyOris exactly?  The online membership service provides Oris wearers a variety of perks: a 12 month extension on the guarantee of any registered watch; access to “MyWatch Finder,” which helps members find their perfect watch; exclusive access to the latest Oris news; and the opportunity to enter in exclusive contests.

To celebrate MyOris’ first birthday, Oris did two things for its members.  It first held a contest for members to win a limited edition graphic by musician, artist, and Oris ambassador Bob Dylan.  Only 295 pieces of the graphic, entitled “Still Life With Peaches,” were produced, making it a true collectors item for any Bob Dylan fan (the contest was closed on January 31st, 2010).  Oris also announced two new languages for MyOris: Thai and simplified Chinese.  Bringing the total languages of MyOris up to 12, the addition of Thai and Chinese open up the service to millions of potential users, making the possibility of adding another 20,000 members by its second birthday a real possibility

Tissot watches won in holiday shopping contest

After five years of marriage, Denise French and her husband finally got their wedding rings they’ve been waiting for all along, plus some bonuses including the choicest of some Tissot watches. What’s better is that they didn’t have to pay a red cent for any of this stuff!

It all started when Denise entered into the Gross Diamon Co. holiday shopping contest on her husband Johnny’s advice. He had seen it in the December issue of Scene and thought that it couldn’t hurt for his wife to enter.

And sure enough, Denise was called sometime later to inform her that she was chosen as the winner of the $5000 giveaway. To be spent at the Gross Diamon Co.

The couple was clearly excited and went early to their appointment at the store to choose their wedding bands and for Denise to choose her engagement ring.

When they finished with the rings they still had a considerable sum left for spending and so after looking and comparing all the different watches, they finally bought Johnny a gorgeous slim, two-tone Tissot watch.

Some other gifts were also purchased and the happy couple left the store happy and content that their Valentine’s day had been full of presents even though it didn’t cost them anything!
