IWC Watches found in new iPhone app

On January 11, 2010, IWC released an exciting new iPhone application for their collections of watches.  Aimed at giving fans and patrons of the brand simple, direct access to all the main content of their website, IWC’s app is filled with interactive and unique features that anyone can have fun with.

IWC Aquatimer Colletion

The app’s main feature is its immense collection of digital animations that explain many of the complex mechanisms found in IWC watches.  Two notable examples are the depth gauge found on the Aquatimer Deep Two and the digital calendar found on the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Digital Date Month.  App users can virtually wind up the power source on the Portuguese Automatic, or, if need be, use the button found on the Big Ingenieur Chronograph to record stopped time.

The most intriguing feature of IWC’s app is the Try-It function.  Using the Try-It function, iPhone owners can take a picture of their wrist and then see how the various watches look on their wrist.  This ingenious feature allows potential customers determine which models they like best without even stepping into a store.  When they find a model they like, the app provides them with a locator that helps guide them to the closest IWC retailer.

On top of all these great features, the IWC watch app is available for free and in 6 different languages.

IWC Pilot Watch Mark XVI Saves the Day!

For those of you are relatively new to luxury watches, the IWC Pilot Mark XVI might be your first major purchase.  As the foremost purveyor of classic dress men’s watches, the International Watch Company is one of the few luxury watch makers that has stayed true to its roots; making watches that are slim, sophisticated, and exceptionally detailed.

iwc pilot watchThe IWC Pilot Mark XVI watch recently gained notoriety in the doomsday flick “2012”, when the main character (John Cusack) used his as collateral for boarding a plane that would save his family’s lives.  As a longtime fan of these watches, I was pleased to see that Sony Pictures places such a high value on this legendary timepiece as well.

The Spitfire Mark XVI (model number IW325504) takes a cue from the Philip Stein company by using a soft-iron inner case to protect the wearer from electromagnetic fields, and contains a 30110 Caliber automatic movement within its 39mm diameter case.  The design of this men’s IWC Pilot Watch immediately brings to mind the cockpit of an aircraft, and is the logical extension of previous Pilot models. Its convex sapphire crystal is designed to secure the watch from extreme conditions, such as a drop in air pressure, and it is water resistant to 60 meters.

IWC and A. Lange & Sohne Launch iPhone Apps

Everyone is doing it and now IWC and A. Lange & Sohne are too: launching apps available via download for Apple’s widely popular iPhone.A Lange Phone App

Luxury watch companies are some of those that have started creating interactive applications to promote their brands and products any way they can and why not? It’s the way of the 21st century. IWC and Sohne are both owned by the Richemont Group, which also claims Cartier watches as one of its own.

The timing of IWC’s application launch should be noted; the Swiss brand which tends to fly under the radar so to speak, received some big attention as 2009 came to a close. In an online poll conducted by Luxist.com, IWC won the distinction of being favorite luxury watch brand, beating out other brands like Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Jaeger Le-Coultre and Patek Philippe.

IWC watches are loved by those who know them; they are extremely well crafted and can come with hefty price tags, but tend not to “make a lot of noise” by using a lot of bling. On its new app, the entire IWC collection is available and there is an interactive “play area” for fans; where users can simulate trying on an IWC watch.

In A. Lange & Sohne’s app, the focus is on its recently released Zeitwerk timepiece, which combines a jumping hours and jumping minutes complication. To explore the complexity of this watch, users can disassemble parts of it, as well as see news and images of other Sohne watches.

IWC Launches Holiday Watches

IWC (the International Watch Company) was founded in 1868 by American expatriate, Florentine Ariosto Jones, in the town of Schaffhausen, Switzerland. For 140 years, the philosophy behind the IWC brand has been one of “good, solid craftsmanship”. IWC_vintage_family_gold

IWC takes what it has done well and makes it better, hence new versions in rose and white gold of the Vintage Collection. Called the “Jubilee Edition”, the release of these men’s watches is timed perfectly for the holiday season.

The IWC Vintage Collection from 2008 included models made in stainless steel and limited edition platinum and whose inspiration for design was taken from the first Special Pilot’s Watch from 1936, the original Portuguese from 1939, the Ingenieur from 1955, the Aquatimer from 1967, the first Da Vinci from 1969 and, the first Portofino from 1984.

The Jubilee Edition, otherwise known as the “Golden Age”, due to the precious metals used in the production of these watches, come in unlimited editions of the famed Pilot’s Watch, Portuguese, Ingenieur, Aquatimer, Da Vinci and Portofino models. The only differences in these new versions are that some are made in rose gold while others are made in white gold and they are technically updated. However, the appeal of these timeless designs still stands.

IWC has only ever really made men’s watches, of which there are many. The flagship is the Big Pilot from the Pilot’s Watches Classics collection, which also houses the Spitfire, named after its split-seconds hand, has the ability to measure time with down-to-the-second precision. The Vintage collection offers watches with a classic cockpit look, and the Specialties collection includes the Grande Complications model, with 21 functions and displays, including a perpetual calendar for the next 500 years.

Add some holiday cheer to your wrist with one of these newly released IWC watches.

IWC Watches And John Mayer

I recently saw John Mayer perform on a cable television music special where he played with several jazz and blues greats from a previous age. And it was hard not to be a little bit impressed that he was aware of the timelessness of their art: That sometimes the brilliance of the past simply cannot be innovated upon and that the old can be as contemporary as the next new thing.IWC Big Pilot's Watch

Thus, having scene that special, I can no longer claim to be surprised that perhaps THE most prized timepiece in his extensive collection can trace its ancestry nearly seventy years: The IWC Big Pilot’s Watch, originally manufactured in 1940.

For all intents and purposes, IWC’s Big Pilot’s Watch has been their bread and butter timepiece. It features one of the largest automatic movements available and has all the famous features that have become synonymous with IWC’s historic brand. Its automatic movement can generate a power reserve of eight and a half days, however, it only runs for seven days before a built in mechanism stops it automatically because the torque that drives the movement could decrease and subsequently its balance and accuracy could be thrown off.

Furthermore, the timepiece is available in either stainless steel or 18 ct. white gold, it has an automatic Pellaton winding system, mechanical movement, a power reserve display, date display, a central hacking seconds hand, an iron case to protect it from magnetic fields, a case diameter of 46.2 mm, case height of 15.8 mm, and it comes with a crocodile leather strap.

Mayer claims that someday he intends to pass his IWC Watches and his Big Pilot’s Watch down to his kids. Who can blame him?

IWC Portuguese Automatic

iwc-portuguese-automaticIt’s the pride of Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Well, I assume it is because other than being the home of IWC, I have no idea what else Schaffhausen is known for. Actually, I think we accidentally bombed it in World War Two, but I digress… Now what was I writing about, oh yeah… The IWC Portuguese Automatic watch.

IWC, which stands for International Watch Company, has been making world renowned timepieces since 1868, and its motto, “Probus Scafusia” which is Latin for “good, solid craftsmanship from Schaffhausen” is as true today as it was when the company started. It is certainly true with the Portuguese Automatic, which is a truly magnificent wristwatch.

The Portuguese Automatic is about as esteemed a luxury watch as you’re going to find on the market. It’s a watch that watchmakers want. That is, the kind of people who pay close attention to craftsmanship almost always give it high praise. And it has basically earned that reputation without resorting to gimmickry. This is a clean, elegant and traditional timepiece. Take a look at its Arabic numerals and you’ll get a sense of its many charms… none of which blink, ring, or distract. On the other hand, it is not the least bit archaic. Of its timeless and contemporary features, this watch has the following: Mechanical movement; an automatic winding system; a seven-day power reserve; a power reserve display; very small seconds hand; a Breguet spring; a rotor that comes with an 18 carat yellow gold medallion; a date display; convex sapphire glass; a sapphire glass back; and the one I am looking at has a dark brown crocodile leather strap.

To sum up: The IWC Portuguese Automatic doesn’t try to show off. It doesn’t have to. It’s already close to perfect.

6 IWC Special Edition Watches

IWC has a long and rich history for crafting magnificent watches.  There is a wide array of series’ to choose from, each presenting fresh and enticing components to its time.  But to get an authentic experience within the world of IWC watches, there are 6 special edition watches that all bear the three letters of the company; IWC.

Portuguese Minute repeater Squelette

This is a limited edition of 25 watches that are all in platinum.  Each is unique to its collection, but it is the platinum with a crocodile leather strap that separates this amazing watch.  The dial sports see through sapphire, convex antireflective glass on both sides so that you can view all of the gadgets that make up this timepiece.

Pilots Chronograph Watches

This is a limited edition of 50 watches in 18 ct. white gold.  It is self winding but has a mechanical chronograph movement.  The chronograph has aggregate timing of up to 12 hours.  Some displays you will find on the watch include a day and date display with the obvious hour and minute display as well.  It also has a soft-inner case for protection against magnetic fields.

Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Edition Kurt Klaus

This limited edition of 50 watches is in platinum along with 500 that are in 18 ct. rose gold.  It features a perpetual calendar and moon display as well as a four-digit year display.  There is a crown-activated rapid calendar advance and an engraved portrait of Kurt Klaus on the back cover to give it true authenticity.

Portofino Chronograph

This is one of the more basic IWC special edition watches you will find on the market.  As expected, it is a chronograph timepiece that has a day and date display.  The watch is in 18 ct. white gold and features a crocodile leather strap.  The glass on the face is sapphire, convex, and antireflective on both sides.

Portofino Automatic

This is a rather basic special edition as well, as it only displays the date.  This watch is 18 ct. white gold as well and also features sapphire, convex and antireflective glass on both sides.  It too has a dark brown crocodile leather strap as well as a blue leather strap and bright blue face to choose from.

Portofino Midsize

This is a simple yet elegant IWC special edition watch.  It features a brown-great satin strap with the option of either 18 ct. white gold or rose gold.  There is an intricate design on the face with a wavy scale-looking design that is equally classy and enticing.  It is a watch that can be worn at a business meeting or at your kid’s basketball game.

Each IWC special edition watch has something different to offer for everyone.  The first three watches mentioned in this article have far more features to them, but the last three are just as impressive.
