Cartier Watches are undoubtedly some of the finest watches money can buy, and the Santos 100 Skeleton is no exception.  A modern representation of the partnership forged by Louis Cartier and Alberto Santos-Dumont back in 1904, this timepiece is both a mechanical and visual marvel to behold.

The star of this watch is Cartier’s mechanical 9611 MC movement.  Comprised of 138 components and 20 jewels, the movement is delicately and painstakingly finished by hand.  The upper bridgework alone takes 15 hours to complete.  Such care is reflected in qualities such as a 72 hour power reserve, which allows the watch to maintain outstanding accuracy.  Each movement is individually identified on the back of the watch.

Cartier does not let this fantastic movement hide behind a typical watch dial and back.  Instead, a skeletonized bridge adapted from the Santos case houses the movement.  Made from 950 ‰ palladium, the case is formed into Roman numerals, creating a truly unique visual presentation that is both striking and easy to read.  Complementing the case are sword-shaped blue steel hands.

Other features of the Cartier Santos 100 Skeleton watch include an alligator skin strap, sapphire crystals on both the front and back of the case, and a triple adjustable folding clasp made from 18k white gold and palladium.  The watch is also water resistant up to 30 meters.

Cartier may be on to something. By re-introducing an ad campaign from the 80’s called “Les Must” the brand is hoping to bolster its sales of luxury accessories, including watches. After suffering a financial hit this past year, the company figures they can still sell high end watches but for a tad bit less.

Items from the “Les Must” campaign include all the things that Cartier is known and loved for: jewelry, rings, earrings, bracelets, men’s watches and women’s watches. Plus I love the combination of French and English, creating that illusion that buying one of these luxury goods is not an option but a “must.”

The “Les Must” watches look no different from other Cartier watches; the elegant shapes and signature Cartier accents like the blue hour and minute hands and the blue cabochon crown remain.

Back in October, Cartier released two new watch models for this collection: Les Must Tank and Ronde Solo.

Both styles are available in men’s and women’s watches (size differentiates) and are slightly simpler than the originals. Rather than being mechanical, they run on quartz movements (this keeps cost down), and to hide this as much as possible, Cartier actually removes the seconds hands so one can’t see it ticking.

The cases are made from steel and although still elegant, they are simpler, as are the steel bracelets. All other style details remain the same, like the crown, Roman numerals, blue sword hands and silvered Opaline dial.

Usher is a lover of many different luxury watches, but recently, as a newly single guy, he seems to be favoring the very elegant and stately Cartier Ballon Bleu. It appears that Usher chooses a large, white gold version, as pictured below. 

Spotted in hot spot St. Barth over the holidays Usher did not seem to be wallowing in the demise of his marriage, which ended in divorce in November. It comes in a stunning nineteen different versions in three sizes: 42, 36.5, and 28.5 mm. Diamonds on the bezel are optional for the women’s watches. As with all other Cartier watches, the Ballon Bleu is a remarkable and worthy watch.

The Cartier Ballon Bleu gets its name from the sapphire cabochon crown which is incorporated into its rounded case. The watch runs on an automatic movement with Cartier caliber 049, has sapphire crystals and the dial features a subtle “C” motif. Prices can range from $4,950 to $46,000 and there is even a “blinged out”, special, limited edition diamond version which goes for a mega $950,000.

For 25 years Cartier has been sponsoring this chic English sporting event. It is the most prestigious polo event in the world and epitomizes the high society lifestyle enjoyed by royalty and celebrities alike.

Similar to the Kentucky Derby, in that tens of thousands of people show up and then, it seems, most of the chitter chatter is not about the match or the race, but about who was there and of course, what they wore.

This year was no different. The event took place at the Windsor Great Park and in years past, attendees have had the added bonus of seeing Prince Harry playing for his father’s side:  The Prince of Wales team.  In case anyone is interested, this year’s match was Argentina vs England, and Argentina won with a final score of 12 -5.

Among the 30,000 guests that attended the Cartier Polo event this past weekend were:  actress Anna Friel, whose low-cut dress provided one too many “side boob” shots, ex Spice Girl Gerri Halliwell, who wore a mini, white see-through dress, actress Neve Campell whose mustard-colored dress did nothing against her pale, pasty skin, Sting’s actress-daughter Fuschia Summer, who actually looked perfect, as well as Prince Charles himself. Ironically there was no mention of anyone wearing Cartier jewelry or Cartier watches. Hmmm.

Arnaud Bamberger, Cartier’s managing director, said: “I’m so proud that we have supported this day for a quarter of a century. Ok, well being “proud” doesn’t pay the bills, so why doesn’t Cartier work this gathering of the rich and famous to their advantage?

Cartier spends all this money on fancy food and bubbles but what do they really get out of it? Why don’t they erect a “mini boutique” where guests can wander in and view a grand selection of Cartier watches?
