Like all the watches in the Diagono collection, the Diagono Ceramic has the double “Bvlgari” logo engraved on its bezel and comes in a structured case. The men’s version has a case that is 42 millimeters in diameter, while the female version has a 37 millimeters diameter. The men’s version is water resistant to 100 meters and the women’s version up to 50 meters. The structured case has sapphire crystal that is scratch resistant and glare-proof. High-tech ceramic can be seen throughout this chronograph, including the bezel, crown, and chronograph pushers. The masculine version has a satin-finish black ceramic bezel, and the feminine version has a glowing white ceramic bezel.

Inside the case of the Diagono Ceramic is a beautiful dial. The men’s version comes in a deep black dial that has three short-time hour, minute, and second measurement sub-dials that are silver-toned or gold-toned. The hour, minute, and second hands are either silver-toned or gold-toned depending on the sub-dials. There is a small date window in between the 4 and 5 o’clock position as well. The women’s version comes in a gorgeous white mother-of-pearl dial with 8 brilliant-cut diamonds hour markers. Similar to the men’s version, there are three sub-dials for the short-time hour, minute, and second measurements and date window at the 4 and 5 o’clock position. The hour, minute, and second hands are rhodium or pink gold-plated.

The Diagono Ceramic is powered by Swis Calibre BVL 130. This self-winding mechanical movement with displays of the date and chronograph is specific for Bulgari. This 37-jewel movement has a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a power reserve of 42 hours, and it measures 28.60 millimeters in diameter and 6.10 millimeters in thickness.

The strap of the watch varies depending on the version and model. The men’s version comes in mono-block black rubber that has steel inserts or 18K pink gold inserts to match the inside of the dial. The women’s version comes in white rubber that has steel pin buckles or 18K pink gold pin buckles depending on the model.

The Moon Invader 40 is part of the Romain Jerome Moon Invader Collection which uses authentic lunar elements such as moon dust, fragments of the Apollo XI and fibers from an International Space Station spacesuit. The rounded case is actually made from a union of steel and spare parts from Apollo XI. The four screws and four ball and socket joints that surround the case are reminiscent of the feet of the lunar landing pod. The traditional X pattern on the dial is a lattice array. This design was inspired by the woven metal strands on the tires of the lunar roving vehicles. The beveled case size is 46 millimeters and shows as a pleasantly rounded cushion shape.

The case-back features a grainy moonscape-textured small disk in Moon Silver representing, of course, the moon. Moon Silver is a combination of precious metal with certified and authenticated moon dust. The Moon Silver obtains a unique finish upon contact by the owner. The aesthetics of the dial are unique and create a grid work pattern which is new to the watch industry. The hands and inner bezel rings are coated with superluminova which shows as an exciting blue at night.

The CVSTOS Challenge Pilot RC Limited Edition watch certainly gives the appearance of being unique. Its black case is barrel-shaped and made of steel and aluminum alloy. The second amazing new watch in the Planet Ocean Collection is the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ceragold White Planet St. Moritz. While the chronograph was all about the color black, the St. Moritz is all about white. Fitting that it is therefore named after the town of St. Moritz in the Swiss mountains where Omega is involved with timing world-renowned bobsleigh races.

The heart of the St. Moritz is an Omega Co-Axial caliber 8501. It is equipped with an 18-carat red gold rotor and balance bridge. This beautiful timepiece comes with a matte white dial with Ceragold bezel and numeral highlights. Engraved on the caseback are: Si14, Ceragold, White Planet and St. Moritz. The Si14 is a reference to the St. Moritz silicon balance spring. The white leather strap with an 18-carat gold foldover clasp completes the timepiece.

The Muhammad Ali Edition watch is unmistakably a Big Pilot’s watch with extra touches that are a fitting tribute to the legend. The dial is a smooth matte-black with an arrowhead index at the 12 o’clock position. The special Big Pilot watch is equipped with IWC’s largest automatic movement, the 51111 caliber. The power reserve indicator at the 3 o’clock position displays the 7 days or 168 hours of power remaining. At the 6 o’clock position, a small date window is displayed.

Being a Big Pilot watch, the crown is a rather large feature. The reason goes back to the days when aviation pilots flew in open or unheated cockpits. To counter the weather, the pilots had to wear quilted flying suits and thick gloves, thus making a normal watch crown hard to wind and set. Hence, the overlarge crown was born.

IWC, known for their active commitment to social responsibility, donated the Big Pilot Muhammad Ali Edition watch to charity at the annual Celebrity Fight Night in Phoenix, Arizona. Many celebrities and professional athletes filled the guest list as Evander Holyfield went on stage to model this one-of-a-kind timepiece. Billy Crystal, Halle Berry and Lionel Richie arrived to support and participate in a night of live musical performances and live auctions. The IWC Big Pilot Muhammad Ali Edition watch was auctioned off along with a special tome weighing 75 pounds with over 3,000 illustrations celebrating Muhammad Ali’s life. The winning bid of $60,000 went directly to the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center which offers care and resources to those afflicted with the disease.

The Urwerk UR-110 is a fascinating timepiece. The means in which it indicates time is by the use of a revolving satellite complication on planetary gears that feature three parallel hour modules that appear to be arrow-shaped torpedoes. The actual time display occurs on the right side of the watch where the minutes are displayed from 0 to 60 in a downward arc. The rotating modules follow this line to constantly display the time. This is an ingenious complication which allows the wearer to glimpse the time by just barely pulling up on a cuff or long sleeve.

The complication of the UR-110 posed some interesting challenges for Urwerk. The watch does not support ball bearings. Instead, a fixed axis runs through the full altitude of the timepiece, thus allowing the complication to be perfectly balanced on the axis. This is a major mechanical achievement.

The dial of the UR-110 also sports a “Control Board” on the left side which displays indicators for Day and Night and whether the watch is due for an “oil change.” The oil change is akin to a service interval display, similar to a vehicle. A small seconds display is also featured on a sub dial. Turn the case over and you will find the automatic winding system which is enclosed and controlled by dual turbines.

The UR-110 TTH has taken the masterpiece a step further. The bezel is crafted in tantalum which is a hard and dense metal known for its resistance to corrosion. TTH stands for “Tantalum Hull.” This metal provides a pleasing bluish-gray shade to the bezel, while sand-blasting and satin-finishing helped to enhance its final presentation. Urwerk also upgraded the strength of the panoramic sapphire crystal.

The brother of the UR-110 TTH, the UR-110 ST is similar in shape and mechanical design but the bezel is another story. The satin finish of the bezel has been replaced by an ALTiN-treated grooved steel surface. Urwerk describes the watch by a famous quote from the poet Paul Claudel, “Sculpture is the need to touch.” With the UR-110 ST, the sensorial experience is what Urwerk wished the owner to encounter.

Gronefeld began the watchmaking business in 1912. Since then, it has been a family-run company with brothers, Tim and Bart Gronefeld, at the helm today. A dead-beat watch is a mechanical watch with a ticking seconds hand. The brothers’ expertise in the world of the tourbillion and the minute repeater watch led to the development of the One Hertz and its dead-beat seconds complication.

The One Hertz, meaning one cycle per second, launched in 2010 with the One Hertz 1912, a limited edition steel watch of 12 pieces. The One Hertz Dune arrived in 2011 in a red gold limited edition of 20 pieces. For 2012, the One Hertz Platinum was released in honor of Tim and Bart’s grandfather who launched the watchmaking business a century ago.

The One Hertz Platinum comes in a gorgeous platinum case with a pleasing blue dial that blends the two colors well. It has an indicator for hours and minutes on a sub-dial at 2 o’clock and a large sub-dial for the dead seconds. There is a power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock with an “S” for setting mode or a “W” for winding. The One Hertz has a unique crown that you press in to change its mode instead of pulling it out. The G-02 caliber completes one operation per second which explains the name “One Hertz.”

It is fascinating and complicated how a dead seconds mechanism functions. In order to keep the friction of the mechanism at its most minimal, Gronefeld used an independent dead seconds device. It has its own power supply and is driven from its own secondary gear train. The seconds and minutes have independent mainspring barrels to minimize friction. The difficulty and expertise behind this concept is apparent and brilliant as this timepiece involves 285 parts.

Gronefeld is a company that has earned a stellar reputation and the respect of the watchmaking world. Though the One Hertz Platinum may be difficult to obtain in its 10 piece limited edition, it is a luxury watch that was made with “passion and patience.” As the Gronefeld brothers state, “Luxury wristwatches are mostly in demand for the emotion they offer.” It is certain that the owner of any one of the Gronefeld One Hertz watches will be proud and emotionally attached to their special timepiece.

Sporting a large 45.5 millimeter case, a cylindrical bezel and a sapphire dial that shows the inner workings, the Big Bang Ferrari impresses with style and a sense of the dramatic. Hublot has incorporated features that were inspired by Ferrari, such as wrist straps with tone on tone stitching used on Ferrari upholstery and a minute counter with hands and markers reminiscent of the Ferrari dashboard. The dial’s minute counter is positioned at 3 o’clock beside a round yellow date window. With Ferrari in mind, the Prancing Horse is featured in relief at the 9 o’clock position. In fact, all the innovations featured on the watch emphasize the relationship to the Ferrari automobile world. The idea being that the watch is more streamlined and mechanical creating a new signature for the brand.

The Big Bang Ferrari comes in a new material by Hublot termed Magic Gold. It is a scratch-resistant 18-carat gold that Hublot developed in its foundry during the beginning of 2012. The watch is also available in satin-finished Titanium. The case is adorned with six of Hublot’s countersunk signature H-shaped screws.

A new quick-change system was developed for the watch straps allowing for two interchangeable straps. This concept originated in relation to the safety seatbelt mechanism of the Ferrari. The strap comes in Black Rubber or Black Gummy Alligator with Black Rubber décor.

The Hublot-Ferrari partnership came about in November 2011. In fact, the agreement between the two states that Hublot is the exclusive watchmaking partner in the full range of Ferrari’s brand image and commercial activities. Quite the achievement. Hublot was at hand in Japan in March 2012 at the Ferrari Racing Days Suzuka to unveil the watch for the first time. It was put up for auction to support the Ishinomaki City earthquake.

Considering Hublot is a brand that was born in 1980, they have achieved a stellar reputation rather quickly. Their dedication to quality and exquisite craftsmanship took them to the rank of leading watchmaking brands. The “Art of Fusion” concept where unique materials were created and used for their brand and the blending of Swiss Watchmaking Tradition and 21^st century Watchmaking Art has led Hublot to renowned worldwide prestige.
