I am happy to report that after almost six months of research, I have found the perfect divers watch for my summer diving trip in New Zealand. A good friend and fellow diver sent me some information he found about the Breitling watch I had my eye on last summer, which has been recently redesigned. It turns out that the new Breitling Super Ocean watch, dubbed the “Queen of the Seas” by some diving aficionados, has all the features I had been searching for in my next watch. After owning my fair share of divers watches, including one older Breitling, I had finally settled on getting a new one last summer, but still hadn’t gotten around to buying it. That’s because I’m the kind of guy who likes to do a lot of research on any new
“gadgets” before buying them. It seems like I either find that the watch is too glitzy, too large for my wrist, or it just doesn’t “thrill” me enough when I try it on, so it can take me quite awhile to find just the right model.
After doing some research, and checking it out for myself, here is my assessment of the Breitling Super Ocean. The case hugs my wrist quite comfortably and looks lot like my old Avenger, but I am happier with the feel of this watch. Even though this case is heavier and thicker than my previous Breitling, it appears a lot thinner while wearing it. Perhaps that is because it sits down better on my wrist.
My favorite element of this case is the helium-release valve, which comes in handy after spending long periods of time underwater. This gives it an edge over some older versions, and a certifiable utility, rather than a lot of useless bells and whistles. It all comes down to taste, but for a serious diver like me, I am buying myself the new Breitling SuperOcean.
