This November, Tag Heuer will celebrate 50 years of being, “The First Swiss Watch In Space,” with the release of its limited edition Carrera Calibre 1887 SpaceX Chronograph watch.
Just 2,012 pieces of this commemorative watch will be produced, all prominently featuring this exact accolade on its dial and case back. The face of the Carrra Calibre 1887 SpaceX at first glance is simple and neat, with easy-to-read, black markings set on a white background, but what this special watch actually represents is decades of complex innovation and development related to space exploration.
Thus explains why SpaceX is mentioned in the watch’s name, a space transport company founded and run by business magnate Elon Musk working specifically to put humans and cargo on Mars. Musk and Tag Heuer had developed a relationship from a previous collaboration involving another of Musk’s companies called Tesla Motors. Tag Heuer, with the release of the Carrera Calibre 1887 SpaceX Chronograph, also celebrates SpaceX’s recent May 25, 2012 achievement of being the first private company to reach the International Space Station with its Dragon spacecraft.
This is seen on the left side of the watch’s dial, where there is a small image of a SpaceX rocket, as well as, on its tinted sapphire case back, which features the same image along with the SpaceX logo. Additionally the dates 1962-2012 can be seen on both sides of the watch to commemorate the 50 years passed since John Glenn donned a Tag Heuer stopwatch when he became the first man to orbit the Earth.
Perfectly combining a sense of the novel and the traditional, of history and of the future, this 43 mm wide watch is made of polished steel, but with a retro stopwatch-like design seen both in its simple numbering and the three knobs coming off of its right side. It further features a brown leather strap, neatly perforated in three rows, offering an edgier appearance, while also giving the watch a more casual and everyday feel.
The Carrera Calibre 1887 SpaceX Chronograph is a classic Tag Heuer timepiece, of which the 2,012 limited edition pieces are slated for release towards the end of this year at a retail price of $5,800 each. Celebrating both the achievements of Tag Heuer and SpaceX in 2012, the Carrera Calibre 1887 SpaceX Chronograph watch is expected to be a functional, aesthetic accessory appreciated by those hopeful that they may one day have a chance to explore the final frontier.
